You’re confused; you take care of your teeth and can’t remember the last time you had a toothache. The thing is, pain isn’t the only indicator that a root canal is necessary. These other symptoms could tip your dentist off and lead them to recommending the treatment.

What Does a Root Canal Do?

A root canal is basically intended to treat a tooth by clearing infected pulp, a spongy material that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues, from its root canals (hence the name) so it doesn’t spread to the bones that support it.

During the procedure, your dentist will create an opening in the affected tooth to clean out the damaged pulp and clear out the canals. They will then fill the now-empty spaces with a latex material called gutta-percha, seal it off, and may recommend a filling or crown to reconstruct the tooth.

The reason a root canal may be recommended even though your mouth feels fine is because the nerves inside your tooth have already died and can’t relay any pain to your brain. So how can your dentist know you need one? That’s where those other indicators come in.

Sensitivity to Hot and Cold

So maybe you’re not in pain exactly, but you tell your dentist you have noticed some tooth sensitivity lately. If a tooth becomes extremely sensitive to hot or cold foods and beverages, it could indicate inflammation or damage to the pulp inside the tooth.

Temporary sensitivity doesn’t necessarily mean you need root canal treatment. However, if it’s intense or lingers after the hot or cold stimulus is gone, it’s often a sign that there’s an underlying issue.

Swollen or Tender Gums

During your checkup, your dentist notices your gums are swollen. Infection inside a tooth can sometimes cause swelling or tenderness in the surrounding gums. They may also notice a small bump or pimple-like spot on the gums near the affected tooth.

Swelling can indicate an infection that requires prompt dental attention.

Fractured Tooth

Maybe instead of a checkup, you’ve made your way to the dentist’s office because of a recent crack or chip to one of your teeth.

Fractures are sometimes the result of a tooth that’s weakened due to decay. If decay penetrates deeply enough, it can infect the pulp and necessitate a root canal. It may have advanced to the point that the nerves inside have deadened, thus you feel no pain.

If your dentist recommends a root canal, the goal is usually to eliminate infection and preserve your natural tooth. Seeking treatment promptly can help prevent the infection from spreading and may reduce the likelihood of needing an extraction.

About the Author

Dr. Joe Ornelas earned his dental degree at the Indiana University School of Dentistry and continues learning through continuing education courses and participation in local dental societies and study clubs.
