The loss of one or several teeth in a row can make it difficult to smile proudly and feel confident when speaking or chewing. Thankfully, many people have used beautiful and functional dental bridges to replace one or more missing teeth with lifelike restorations. Here’s a quick look at how dental bridges work and how you can keep your appliance in gorgeous shape for years.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A traditional dental bridge consists of usually only one or two artificial teeth suspended between two dental crowns placed on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap created by tooth loss. These devices can restore about 20% of the patient’s original chewing power and last for seven years or more if the patient keeps their appliance clean and prevents oral infections with excellent dental hygiene.

An implant bridge, on the other hand, is a line of usually two to four artificial teeth supported by titanium dental implants placed in the jawbone tissue at either end of the gap created by tooth loss. These prosthetic appliances can restore about 80% of their owner’s natural chewing power and may last for decades if they practice excellent oral hygiene.

How Can I Keep My Dental Bridge in Great Shape?

The best ways to maximize your dental bridge’s lifespan include:

  • Practicing excellent oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash every day.
  • Visiting your dentist every six months for routine exams and cleanings.
  • Abstaining from bad habits like smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, teeth grinding, using your smile to open bottles, and chewing on nonfood materials like wood, ice, metal, plastic, and fingernails.
  • Wearing a nightguard to bed if you grind your teeth in your sleep or an athletic mouthguard when playing sports. Your dentist can set you up with a customized appliance that offers superior protection.
  • If you have a traditional bridge, take special care to gently clean along the seams between your crowns and your natural enamel when brushing.

Don’t let tooth loss deprive you of a smile you are eager to show off. Consulting with your dentist can help you understand the best way to replace your missing teeth.
