A healthy smile is linked to good overall health, and the start of a brand-new year is the perfect time to make changes that improve your well-being. Many people wish they could take better care of their teeth and gums, but they’re not exactly sure how. It helps to break down the process into smaller, more tangible steps. Here are four simple New Year’s resolutions that can help you maintain a healthy smile in 2021.

1. Floss Every Day

Most of us remember to brush our teeth twice a day, but only about 30% of American adults floss daily. Flossing is the only way to remove food particles from between your teeth. If they linger there, they could attract bacteria that contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. To help you remember to floss every evening, set a nightly reminder on your phone. Or, set your floss container right in front of your toothbrush holder.

2. Eat More Vegetables

Foods that are high in sugars and other carbohydrates fuel the bacteria in your mouth that cause cavities. By eating less sugar, you’ll essentially starve those bacteria so that they can’t produce the acidic waste that creates cavities. Replacing sugary foods with veggies like celery will not only reduce your sugar intake, but it will supply your mouth with minerals that strengthen your teeth.

3. Quit Using Tobacco Products

There’s no time like the new year to kick a tobacco habit. Whether you smoke, chew, or vape it, tobacco harms your oral and overall health. It has been linked to a doubled or even tripled risk of gum disease, as well as a higher risk of oral cancer. Consider asking your dentist or doctor to resources to help you quit.

4. Schedule a Dental Checkup and Cleaning

According to the American Dental Association, most people should visit their dentist for a checkup and cleaning at least twice a year. That’s once every six months. At these visits, your dentist can detect and treat oral health problems like cavities and gum disease early on. Also, the dental hygienist can clean your teeth and remove plaque before it causes these issues in the future.

By following these easy New Year’s resolutions, you can maintain a healthy smile in 2021 and beyond!
