5 Signs That Your Dentures Should Be Replaced

If you’ve replaced some or all of your teeth with dentures, then you know that today’s dentures are much more comfortable, lifelike, and durable than the ones your grandparents wore. Unfortunately, even the most well-made denture won’t last forever. On average, you can expect your denture to last for about seven years. How can you tell if you need a new one before then? Keep an eye out for these five signs that your dentures should be replaced.

1. Your Dentures Are Loose or Falling Out

When your dentures fit correctly, the natural suction against your gums should be enough to keep them firmly in place for most activities. However, your jawbone gradually deteriorates after tooth loss because the tooth roots are no longer there to stimulate it. So, your denture will end up losing its snug fit after a few years.

If your dentures are slipping around or even falling out of your mouth, this is a sign that it’s time to ask your dentist whether you need a replacement. Denture adhesive can help in the meantime, but it’s only a temporary fix.

2. You’re Having Trouble Speaking Clearly

Speech problems are usually the result of a loose-fitting denture. You may notice that you sound “slushy” or that you’re unintentionally slurring your words. If it’s becoming difficult for you to speak clearly, your dentures might have to be replaced or adjusted.

3. Your Dentures Are Causing Discomfort or Gum Sores

Dentures that fit well should never cause discomfort or pain. If it starts to hurt when you bite or chew, call your dentist. You should also let them know if your dentures have caused any sores on your gums.

4. Your Dentures Are Damaged

If you notice that any of your false teeth are chipped, cracked, or loose, you’ll need to get them replaced right away. This type of damage will only worsen and become more uncomfortable over time.

5. Your Dentures Are Stained

Discoloration is also a perfectly good reason to replace your dentures. This can be prevented with the right care, but it can still happen despite your best efforts, especially if you drink a lot of coffee, tea, or wine while wearing them.

No denture lasts forever, but when the time comes to get a new one, your dentist is here to help. They’ll come up with a solution to have you smiling again in no time!
