Strengthening Smiles with the Power of Minerals

Fluoride Treatments

Did you know that your tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body? It’s even harder than your bones! While many people think teeth are made of bone tissue, this is a common misconception. Bones are a living, growing tissue, and on the other hand enamel is a mineralized, non-living part of the body. This is what makes enamel so strong, but it also means that it can’t regenerate itself once damage has taken place- such as cavities.

Fortunately, modern dentistry can help! At Ornelas Family Dentistry, we offer professional fluoride treatments that are ideal for strengthening smiles with the power of minerals. We can help rebuild and fortify your enamel to ward off tooth decay and keep your smile strong. To learn more, give us a call today to schedule your next appointment!

Why Choose Ornelas Family Dentistry for Fluoride Treatment?

What Is Fluoride?

Dr. Ornelas is proud to offer fluoride treatment to patients as young as 6 months old.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has earned an amazing reputation for its ability to help strengthen tooth enamel, which is the hard, outer layer of the teeth. Each day, our tooth enamel loses important minerals from exposure to acids in our diets and biproducts of dangerous bacteria. Fluoride treatment from Dr. Ornelas can help restore these minerals, rebuild the enamel and help protect your teeth against sensitivity and decay.

Fluoride can be found in a variety of foods and may also be added to your local water supply. It is often a key ingredient in ADA approved toothpaste; however, it can also be applied directly to your teeth via a treatment from Dr. Ornelas. This treatment is completely painless and can be done in just minutes at the end of your routine dental check-up and cleaning.

How Fluoride Treatment Works

Fluoride treatment is applied directly to the teeth by Dr. Ornelas

After your dental check-up and cleaning, Dr. Ornelas will apply a concentrated amount of fluoride directly to your teeth. It may come as a gel, solution, varnish, or foam, and could be applied via a brush, tray, or swab.

Your fluoride treatment can be performed in just a few minutes, and because it’s completely painless, it does not require any local anesthetic.

Following the application of your fluoride treatment, you will need to refrain from eating or drinking anything for at least 30 minutes to allow the fluoride time to be absorbed into your enamel. Once the 30-minute wait is over, we recommend avoiding anything acidic, crunchy, or spicy for as long as possible just to give the fluoride a bit more time to work.

Benefits of Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride can help reduce up to 33% of cavities

Fluoride treatment can benefit patients as young as 6 months old, but it is typically recommended for those between 4 to 6 years of age; however, this will be at the discretion of Dr. Ornelas.

When used regularly, fluoride has been shown to prevent up to 33% of cavities in primary teeth, and when combined with dental sealants, can lower your risk of tooth decay by up to 95%! This, combined with excellent oral hygiene and a diet low in sugar and carbohydrates, offers exceptional protection for your smile.
